IN THE DARK: exhibition of photographic prints showcased a series of photograms to mimic the experience of feeling in the dark. Playing with light and shadows, prints developed in the darkroom were left open to chance without too much interference or a final fixed objective.
The outcomes were then organised into a series of stages recording the response in journal form. Akin to the rites of passage practiced by traditional societies it seeks to give meaning to the experience and reconcile us to letting go of the familiar and welcoming the dark as a necessary transition into new possibilities.
A collaboration project following the exhibition saw Year 1 Dance students at Middlesex University respond to the work and interact with the prints as a backdrop for their performance, “Beneath”, choreographed by April Brown.
